Do replacement windows save energy?

Yes, but less than some sales pitches claim. Here's the honest version.

What the data says

ENERGY STAR says certified windows lower household energy bills by about 12% on average nationwide compared with non-certified products. Savings are largest when you replace single-pane or badly leaking windows, and smaller if you already have decent double-panes.

Payback

At roughly $2,000 a window, energy savings alone usually take decades to repay the cost. The better reasons to replace are comfort (fewer drafts and cold spots), condensation, noise, windows that won't open, rot, and resale appeal. The 2025 Cost vs. Value report estimates about 75% of the cost of vinyl window replacement is recouped at resale, nationally.

Tax credits and rebates

The federal 25C credit (up to $600 a year for qualifying windows) ended for windows placed in service after December 31, 2025. Check your utility for any current rebates and confirm with a tax professional.

Cheaper fixes first

  • Weatherstripping and caulking around existing windows
  • Storm windows over sound older windows
  • Replacing just the foggy insulated glass unit if the frame is good
